Friend — I want to follow up on my recent updates on Trump’s first actions as president.
You may have seen this in the news already, but I thought it would be important to talk about this: Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of over 1,500 people charged with crimes from the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6th.
I was at the Capitol that day, and I will never forget the fear that we felt when we learned that a far-right mob had stormed the building. I will never forget the call I made to the father of my children, asking him to tell my children I loved them in case I couldn't.
Now the people who attacked our Capitol are free of the consequences of their crimes — many of whom are leaders or members of avowed white nationalist and extremist groups.
But Samuel , January 6th was not solely significant for the havoc that it caused, the property destroyed, or the lives it cost. January 6th was significant because it was an attack on the seat of our democracy. An attempted coup, specifically designed to overturn the most fundamental of democratic processes — a nationwide election — on the day its results were to be certified.
It was unprecedented in American history, and it’s unacceptable that President Trump is pardoning those responsible. It’s a sign of how authoritarian and anti-democratic the Republican party has become under his leadership. And it shows what’s on the line over the next four years.
If we are to truly protect and strengthen our democracy in the face of rising fascism, we must reconnect to the working class of this country and prove that we fight for them.
We must offer real solutions to the issues facing our neighbors and our communities. Offer a bold alternative to the hate and authoritarianism of Trump's politics. And build a new grassroots majority for democracy and justice for all.
In solidarity,
Ilhan Omar
