America’s Golden Age Can Include Maine

After taking the oath of office, President Donald Trump began his inaugural address with a bold declaration: “The golden age of America begins right now.”

For all our sakes, let’s hope that is true—and that Maine plays an integral part in this new chapter of American prosperity.

This is Assistant House Republican Leader Katrina Smith of Palermo with the Weekly Republican Address.

Never before in the history of the United States has a President begun their administration by signing so many Executive Orders on their first day in office. President Trump is acting on the clear mandate from his landslide victory last November.

While the full impact of these orders may take time to unfold, they represent a bold start. Several of them are poised to bring significant benefits to Americans who are struggling to make ends meet—and they will resonate right here in Maine.

Securing Our Borders

One of the first actions taken by the President is declaring an emergency at our southern border.

For years, Maine has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on economic migrants who entered the U.S. illegally and were relocated here. Many are housed at taxpayer expense, diverting funds from addressing our growing homeless population. By securing our borders, we can use our resources to focus on the needs of Maine citizens.

Combating Drug Cartels

Another critical move is designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.

It’s no secret that the flow of dangerous drugs into the U.S. has surged due to weak border policies. These cartels are degrading our safety and quality of life, and Maine is no exception. Asian Transnational Criminal Organizations have been operating in rural Maine for years.

This Executive Order will provide much-needed resources and attention to this problem—something the Mills Administration and the media have failed to adequately address.

Addressing Energy Costs and Inflation

The President has also declared a National Energy Emergency and directed his cabinet to immediately address the inflation crisis.

Energy costs are at the heart of rising prices. Together, these orders aim to reverse inflation, bringing relief to families and businesses in Maine who are struggling to keep up with skyrocketing costs for heating oil, electricity, and everyday goods.

Restoring Common Sense

Other Executive Orders tackle dangerous ideologies and restore policies rooted in common sense.

The Trump Administration is taking steps to end government DEI programs and reaffirm that government policy recognizes two genders: male and female. These measures will protect women’s rights, defend fairness in sports, and promote biological truth.

Additionally, the President’s order to terminate the federal electric vehicle mandate is welcome news. Maine consumers value choice, and public pressure has already pushed back against extremist environmental policies that could have forced unwanted mandates on drivers.

Protecting Maine’s Natural Resources

Finally, the President has issued an Executive Order to temporarily halt offshore wind lease sales and pause permits and loans for both onshore and offshore wind projects.

This is a victory for Maine’s fishing families, marine ecosystems, and consumers, who are already overpaying for electricity.

A Bright Future for Maine

These Executive Orders are just the beginning. They set the stage for the policies and actions needed to deliver on President Trump’s commitment to Make America Great Again.

Here in Maine, Legislative Republicans are eager to build on this momentum. We are committed to proposing and supporting policies that will strengthen our communities, grow our economy, and bring about a golden age for our state.

We welcome like-minded Democrats to join in.
