Five ways our community showed up to protect our rights this week.
ACLU Supporter, it's officially the end of Donald Trump's first week back in office.
Already, it's been a lot to keep track of – President Trump signed more executive orders on his first day in office than any other president in American history, targeting the rights of immigrants, LGBTQ people, and more.
Thanks to your support, our lawyers are already at work defending our rights against these attacks – here's a round-up of what happened during Week One and how the ACLU is responding:
* We've sued the Trump administration twice to protect immigrants' rights. Within two hours of Trump signing his executive order attempting to ban birthright citizenship in direct violation of the Constitution, we filed suit. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked this order in a separate case, our case will continue in court. We filed again to stop his plans to massively expand fast-track deportation – deporting people without even a chance to see a judge and argue their case. Outside of the courtroom, our community came together and sent over 49,000 messages to Congress to defend immigrants' rights.
* The TikTok ban was delayed – and supporters like you are leading the charge to repeal it for good. Together, we're pushing Congress to pass the bipartisan Repeal the TikTok Ban Act and protect our free speech rights.
* The first immigration bill of the new Congress is going to Donald Trump's desk. S.5 is a xenophobic bill that mandates the detention of thousands of immigrants without any consideration for due process or risk to the community. Despite hundreds of calls from ACLU supporters urging Congress to stop this bill, this will be the first new law under the new Trump administration.
* President Trump issued a broad executive order targeting transgender people's equality under the law. This order requires government offices to discriminate against trans people and attempts to deny the existence of our communities. This action threatens our freedom to be ourselves. No matter what President Trump says, transgender people have always been here, and we're not going anywhere.
* We're making the Senate hold President Trump's cabinet picks to account. We don't oppose or endorse nominees, but because cabinet picks impact our civil rights and civil liberties, we deserve real answers about their commitments to our freedoms. Urge your Senator to ask Kash Patel, Donald Trump's pick for FBI director, the critical questions. <[link removed]>
ACLU Supporter, the news cycle can feel overwhelming, but with supporters like you leading the charge to protect our rights, we know we can win. Together, we're ready to take on any attacks on our rights and keep our communities safe.
