This week, we watched as Donald Trump took the oath of office and immediately signed a series of unsettling executive orders.

He targeted the immigrants, LGBTQ+ community, climate change efforts, and even birthright citizenship, as well as pardoned 1,500 January 6th rioters.

As expected, his rhetoric is as dangerous as ever, continues to incite, and the promises he's made are a threat for everyone in Illinois.

His policies, clearly influenced by the billionaires around him, won't fix our broken immigration system or alleviate the rising costs of groceries and rent.

Both his speech and his actions signal a challenging four years ahead for working families, immigrant communities, and LGBTQ+ people, which is why we need to act now.

As your Congressman for Illinois' 4th Congressional District, I am ready to stand firm against these harmful tactics and defend Chicago and Illinois' historic status as a sanctuary city, continuing to be a national leader in progressive values.

Jesús “Chuy” García is the Congressman of Illinois’ 4th Congressional District and one of the first Mexican immigrants to be sworn into the US Congress. Chuy is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. He is also a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Equality Caucus, and the Congressional New American Citizens Caucus.

As a progressive community leader and public servant for almost 40 years, Chuy has been recognized for his extensive work fighting for immigration rights, universal health care, criminal justice reform, and workers’ rights.

In 2015, Chuy emerged as a national leader when he challenged Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and became the first candidate in Chicago history to push an incumbent mayor into a runoff election. Chuy received an outpouring of local and national support and helped reawaken the independent progressive movement in Chicago.

Chuy has received many distinctions for his tireless advocacy of social justice. Chuy and his wife, Evelyn, continue to reside in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood where they enjoy the company of their three children and several grandchildren.
