More than 1 in 5 U.S. households are food insecure. But despite the scale of this unprecedented health and economic crisis, our government has continued to prioritize corporations over people. The recent bill passed by the House failed to include a paycheck guarantee, protections for frontline workers, increased oversight to previously allocated funds, a halt to big mergers and acquisitions, or a freeze or assistance with rent and mortgage payments. All of these programs would make a huge difference in the lives of so many Americans. If you agree that it’s time for a relief package that puts people, not corporations, first, add your name to our petition calling on Congress to act now. Every aspect of the economy here in Iowa, from farming to small business to manufacturing, has faced significant challenges. Meatpacking plants have become hotspots for the coronavirus outbreaks, especially in my hometown of Sioux City. They’ve closed down for days or weeks at a time, hurting farmers who are desperate for markets to sell their livestock. Corn, soybean, pork, and other commodity prices have all plummeted, and many of our small businesses remain closed due to state orders or fear of the coronavirus. Workers and most farmers aren’t receiving the same support and resources as corporations. Let’s make this clear: Our country is powered by nurses, farmers, teachers, small business owners, truck drivers, and more -- not corporate CEOs. If members of Congress are going to use these spending bills as their own personal wish list, then they should be fighting for and delivering direct aid and resources for those who truly need it -- working people and families.
