Can it be that taxpayers are no longer on the hook for Big Wind?

News Max (1/23/24) reports: "President Donald Trump on Thursday praised Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., for his work in drafting the executive order he signed to halt offshore wind turbine projects on the East Coast. 'A special thank you to great New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew for his fight against a large scale Windmill DISASTER off the coast of Southern New Jersey,' Trump wrote in the post. 'It needed MASSIVE GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY that was impossible to justify.' 'Hopefully the project is dead and gone, as almost all unsightly and environmentally unsound Windmill project should be,' he said. 'Congratulations to the great people of New Jersey. You have FINALLY won your war on stupidity!!!' Trump on Monday signed an executive order establishing a temporary national moratorium on approving new federal leases for wind turbine projects or renewing existing leases, whether for offshore projects or those on dry land. The Cherry Hill Courier-Post reported that the six-month moratorium took effect on Tuesday and significantly affects New Jersey, where plans for offshore wind turbines have been hotly debated for some time. The permitting process for offshore wind turbines was also halted by the president’s order and came as a welcome development for Van Drew, whose district lies in the southern portion of the Garden State."

AI needs reliable electricity. Renewables aren't going to cut it...

Fast Company (1/23/25) reports: "Data center builders in California are using a shortcut in the state’s power plant regulations to construct facilities that use enormous amounts of energy with limited public input. A process originally intended to speed up approvals for emergency power plants for residents and oil drilling and refining is being used to greenlight diesel generators to supply backup power for large computer servers. More than 1 gigawatt of diesel-based energy—enough to power at least 161,969 households for a year—has been approved as emergency power for California data centers since 2017. Diesel is a fossil fuel that, when burned, contributes to climate change and emits carcinogens that pose health risks to those in nearby communities. With artificial intelligence pushing energy demands ever higher, a business group representing tech companies last year lobbied the state Legislature to expand the Small Power Plant Exemption, which is administered by the California Energy Commission, from 100 megawatts to 150 megawatts a day. Though the effort failed, the quest for more energy to power data centers is intensifying. Currently no operating data center in the state uses more than 100 megawatts. A decade ago, a center of that scale would have been among the largest in the world. Now, however, companies in California and nationwide are pursuing permits to construct facilities many times that size."

But help is on the way.

CNBC (1/23/25) reports: "President Donald Trump said Thursday he will expedite the construction of power plants for artificial intelligence through an emergency declaration, as the U.S. races against China for dominance in the industry. 'We’re going to build electric generating facilities. I’m going to get the approval under emergency declaration. I can get the approvals done myself without having to go through years of waiting,' Trump said in a virtual address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Trump declared a national energy emergency on his first day in office, directing federal agencies to use whatever emergency authorities they have at their disposal to expedite energy infrastructure projects...While the tech sector has invested in carbon-free power to meet its climate goals, analysts believe natural gas will play a pivotal role in powering AI because it’s plentiful, is more reliable than renewables and can be deployed faster than nuclear."
