Friend – It's been an incredibly busy week, and we know we've sent you more emails than we normally do, but I want to make sure you know what's going on. On Tuesday, the Alaska Legislature gaveled in for the beginning of the session in Juneau. For the next four months, we expect to see a wide variety of bills that work to uphold – and take away – the civil rights and liberties of Alaskans. Given the new challenges we are seeing at the federal level, it's critical that states enact policies to protect targeted groups of people and systems crucial to our democracy. We're headed to Juneau next week to begin meeting with legislators and to start advocating for our top priorities, including elections reform, oversight and accountability for the Department of Corrections, protecting free speech and protest rights, and defending the rights of transgender Alaskans. Read more about our legislative priorities on our blog.
We know that our state is a firewall for freedom to push back against federal policies that threaten the values of what it means to be an Alaskan. We encourage you to take action, engage with your elected officials, speak up for the things you care about, and stay connected to organizations that are working to defend your rights in Juneau this spring. Stay tuned for our next update! Mike Garvey |
