John, overturning Roe v. Wade was just the beginning for anti-choice Republicans. Nearly three years later, abortion is now banned in 19 states. But that number could have been a lot higher had it not been for Democratic pro-choice women governors vetoing anti-choice legislation and protecting the right to choose in their states. Take a look:
We know extremist Republicans are determined to ban abortion nationwide — especially while they have an anti-choice ally in the White House. That's why the work of Democratic pro-choice governors is (and always has been) so important:
- Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs repealed the state's near-total abortion ban, which had been passed in the Civil War era.
- New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham allocated funds to establish a reproductive health and abortion clinic serving both local residents and those traveling from neighboring states.
- Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repealed the state's 1931 abortion ban that criminalized nurses and doctors for doing their jobs.
We know the best way to fight anti-choice extremism is to elect Democratic pro-choice women at every level of government — especially Democratic pro-choice women governors. This year alone, we've already endorsed Jocelyn Benson for governor of Michigan, Abigail Spanberger for Virginia governor, and Rep. Mikie Sherrill for New Jersey governor!
