Welcoming Activists to the Summer of HER

The #Fight4HER campaign's Summer of HER, a summer-long activist
institute that trains fellows on grassroots organizing skills,
officially begins on June 1. This summer, we have 129 fellows in our
eight target states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New
Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania-who will help
drive the #Fight4HER campaign, gaining invaluable experience fighting
for reproductive health and rights using grassroots organizing
tactics.

We kicked off the 2020 program with a welcome call in mid-May that
featured a special video message from Rep. Chris Pappas (D-NH-1)!
The #Fight4HER campaign focuses on passing the Global HER Act to
repeal the Global Gag Rule, a U.S. foreign assistance policy that
blocks federal funding for global health organizations that provide
abortion counseling, referrals, or procedures; advocate to
decriminalize abortion in their own countries; or work with partner
organizations that participate in these activities.

In a National Volunteer Call on May 20, open to anyone interested in
activism with us this summer, Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA-7) and our Director
of Congressional Relations, Stacie Murphy, discussed the importance of
passing the Global HER Act and ran through all the ways activists can
take action throughout the summer. Watch a recording of the call to
learn more!

Introducing Activists to South African #Fight4HER
Advocate, Dr. T

On May 21, we hosted a live Twitter chat with Dr.
Tlaleng Mofokeng (Dr. T), a fierce medical doctor, author, and sexual
and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) activist in South Africa. We
and Dennis Carter, Senior News Editor at Rewire.News, alternated
asking Dr. T questions to learn about the devastating impacts of
Trump's Global Gag Rule and COVID-19 on patients in South
Africa.

Just as the one-hour Twitter chat was beginning, Dr. T sent us a
private message to let us know that she was on her way to the hospital
to perform an emergency C-section. She assured us that she could
participate as planned from the car (someone was driving her), and she
did just that. Dr. T is now the official Action Fund staff hero.
Follow us on Twitter if you want to join exciting events like this in
the future!
