Minnesota GOP may pursue recall elections for DFL members boycotting start of legislative session, party's House leader says
[[link removed]]
On Thursday, the Minnesota Supreme Court will hear arguments in the DFL lawsuit against the GOP that argues House Republicans were wrong to claim they have a majority in the House. That's one of the reasons why 66 House DFL representatives had a secret swear-in and are boycotting the session.
One of the biggest sticking points is that Republicans have so far refused to seat DFL Rep. Brad Tabke despite the fact that a district court ruled that Tabke did win his House election by 14 votes — even though 20 ballots have gone missing. That's why Democrats say they will continue their boycott.
DFL House Leader Melissa Hortman says during that boycott DFL reps should get paid.
"They are absolutely working in their districts. Me, for example, I met with my police chief and my mayor," Hortman said.
After another court ruling on Friday, it now looks like a special House election in Roseville won't happen until sometime in March. Democrat Curtis Johnson easily won but had to resign after a court ruled he did not meet residency requirements.
Now, the DFL may continue their boycott through that new special election date.
During that time, GOP House Leader Lisa Demuth says Republicans will control the House and she will continue as speaker. She also says the GOP may pursue recall elections against DFL members who don't show.

Trump expected to quickly revive ‘global gag rule’ on abortion
[[link removed]]
President-elect Trump is expected to reinstate a controversial policy soon after taking office that would further bar foreign nongovernmental organizations that perform, counsel on or provide information on abortions abroad from receiving U.S. funding.
The Mexico City Policy, referred to as the global gag rule by its opponents, was first introduced during the second Reagan administration and has been rescinded by every Democratic president and reinstated by every Republican president since then. Trump previously restored the policy four days into his first term before President Biden rescinded it again a week into his own.
Proponents of the policy claim that it prevents U.S. taxpayer funds from being spent on abortions. But opponents stress that there is legislation in place — like the Helms Amendment — that already protects taxpayer funds from being used on abortions abroad.
Instead, they argue, the global gag rule imposes restrictions that diminish the effectiveness of global health programs.
“It’s like putting a brand-new red sock into a white load of laundry, it taints everything that’s around it,” said Rachel Clement, senior director of U.S. government strategy at the Population Action International, a nongovernmental organization that works to increase global access to family planning and reproductive care.

Cecile Richards, former Planned Parenthood president, has died
[[link removed]]
Cecile Richards, a women’s rights crusader who served as president of Planned Parenthood as the nation approached a critical inflection point over reproductive freedom, has died, her family said Monday in a statement. She was 67.
“This morning our beloved Cecile passed away at home, surrounded by her family and her ever-loyal dog, Ollie. Our hearts are broken today but no words can do justice to the joy she brought to our lives,” it read.
Richards died just hours before President Donald Trump was sworn in to a second term as president.
Richards’ family was “grateful to the doctors and health care workers who provided her excellent care and the friends, family, and well-wishers who have been by her side during this challenging time,” it said.
While Richards’ family did not disclose her cause of death in the statement, Richards spoke openly with CNN’s Anderson Cooper last June about her battle with glioblastoma– an aggressive type of brain cancer that is incurable and has a survival rate of 12 to 18 months.
“There’s been highs and lows, but I feel really fortunate to have health care that is first class living in New York City,” Richards told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “It’s made me appreciate how much all people need health care.”
