[1]Mark Kelly for Senate

Friend, I joined MSNBC last night to talk about Pete Hegseth’s nomination.

Here’s what I told Lawrence O’Donnell on air: Pete Hegseth is uniquely unqualified for this job.

Hegseth’s personal and professional track record — riddled with allegations of mismanagement and substance abuse — are alarming for someone tasked to serve in a role this important to our national security.

I asked him about those allegations at the hearing. Point blank, I asked Pete Hegseth if any of the denials he has made about the numerous allegations against him would be different if he gave them under oath. He refused to answer that question.

Beyond his lack of transparency, nothing I’ve seen from Pete Hegseth indicates that he is qualified.

It is my responsibility to make sure that whoever fills this position has the experience and judgment to walk into a room of anyone from cadets to foreign military leaders and earn their respect and trust.

The United States military is the largest federal agency, bar none — with 3.4 million people serving in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Space Force, or National Guard, or working as civilian contractors or employees at the Department of Defense. The Secretary of Defense directs a budget of more than $800 billion. They have to manage a massive bureaucracy. Above all, they’re tasked with keeping 334 million Americans safe.

This is the most important national security job there is. So now, I’m asking for your input:

Add your name here if you think that Pete Hegseth is unqualified to serve as Secretary of Defense. I’d appreciate hearing from you on this.

This is important. Thanks for sounding off.
