John,

52 years ago on January 22, 1973, Roe v. Wade was decided by the Supreme Court to provide the right to choose — enshrining reproductive rights for decades to come.

This landmark decision turned the page on American history, a huge step in the right direction for healthcare access. Since then we have still had to fight to protect the right, as anti-abortion groups fought to overturn the decision.

Unfortunately, in 2021, with Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, we faced a major setback. It overturned Roe, meaning that the right to safe, legal abortion access is no longer guaranteed in this country. It’s left up to the states to regulate, meaning that anti-abortion politicians can take the wheels to pass legislation to strip away reproductive rights. The government should not have this type of control.

Not only did the Supreme Court’s decision endanger the lives of millions of women, but we’ve also seen women facing criminal punishments for traumatic miscarriages or stillbirths since 2022. When I ran for Governor, I promised to make Maryland a safe haven for abortion access — and I am keeping good on that promise.

In 2023, I signed historic legislation to protect reproductive rights in Maryland.

In 2024, I supported the initiative to codify abortion rights in the Maryland State Constitution, with the Yes on One Campaign. I’m happy to say that this campaign succeeded, and abortion is now a constitutionally protected right in Maryland.

Abortion care is health care. Our responsibility to fiercely protect these rights begins in Maryland, as we continue to lead the country in the fight for progress.

Elevate,

Wes
