John,
The unthinkable happened on Monday, January 20th—not just that Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, but that on his very first day in office one of his very first official acts was to pardon every single violent offender involved in the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot.
Among the felons who Trump deemed worthy of presidential clemency were Enrique Tarrio and Stewart Rhodes. Tarrio is a leader of the hate group Proud Boys, and Rhodes is the founder and leader of of the far-right militia Oath Keepers. Tarrio was serving a weighty 22-year sentence for seditious conspiracy; Rhodes was in for 18 years.
It shouldn't really come as a surprise that a convicted felon, once elected to the highest office in the land, would use that power to protect offenders who used force and violence to keep him there. Trump's hold on power for himself or his chosen successor depends on the always-looming threat of political violence against his opponents—including regular Americans who dare to oppose him, all of which he referred to as the "enemy within" during the 2024 campaign.
And, as ever, Colorado's Disgrace, Lauren Boebert, has committed herself fully to the project of licking Trump's boots:
