These are the heartbreaking words of a mother who spoke to the Associated Press about the air pollution pouring out of the oil refineries and chemical plants that surround her Houston home.

Our government should be making every effort to protect families like hers from breathing polluted air, which new and alarming studies indicate is linked to higher COVID-19 death rates.

But instead, Trump's EPA is gutting critical pollution safeguards at the very moment when we need them most.

You don't need a crystal ball to predict what will happen if the Trump administration continues to weaken and roll back critical environmental and public health safeguards: Millions of families will pay the price, especially in marginalized communities and communities of color that already suffer disproportionately from the effects of pollution.

In the past few weeks, they've illegally rolled back clean car standards that reduce tailpipe pollution, refused to tighten restrictions on industrial soot that would have saved 12,500 lives a year, and launched plans to weaken limits on mercury and other toxic air pollutants from dirty, coal-fired power plants.

Enough is enough. We cannot allow 50 years of environmental progress to be reversed. Not during a public health crisis. Not ever.
