John,

At Tuesday’s National Cathedral inaugural prayer service, Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde stood before Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, and their families and made a plea for mercy.

She asked Donald Trump to show compassion for LGBTQ kids and immigrant families—many of whom are terrified about what his second term could mean for their lives:

"In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now."

Bishop Budde’s words were a courageous and honest call for compassion, rooted in the deepest values of the Christian faith: mercy, dignity, and justice for the marginalized. But what happened next showed just how coordinated and effective the far-right media machine has become in silencing dissent and distorting truth.

We’ll explain more in a moment, but can you chip in $25 to support the progressive media alternative America desperately needs? Together, we can lift up voices of truth and stand strong against the far right. [[link removed]]

In the right-wing media, the response to Budde’s plea for compassion was swift, brutal, and orchestrated.

Donald Trump started the attacks on Truth Social, calling her a “so-called bishop” and accusing her of spreading lies. Fox News and far-right influencers followed his lead, smearing Budde’s character and twisting her words:

* Sean Hannity called her sermon “a disgraceful prayer full of fearmongering and division.”
* Far-right influencer Matt Walsh claimed she was “blasphemous” and said, “Hell exists for people like Mariann.”
* Fox’s Greg Gutfeld went so far as to call her “Satan,” saying she represents “compassion exploited for terrible beliefs."

These attacks are part of a larger strategy by Trump and his allies: intimidate dissenters, and create fear to silence those who dare speak the truth and challenge their agenda.

And right now, their strategy is working.

That’s why your support for COURIER is so urgent right now. We’re building a progressive media alternative to counter their lies and lift up the voices they want to silence.

Where they distort, we tell the truth. Where they bully, we empower.

But we can’t do any of this without your help.

We’ve set an urgent goal to raise $50,000 by the end of January to expand our reach and stand up to the far-right’s influence. Your support will help us:

* Deliver factual, fearless reporting that holds power accountable.
* Push back against right-wing intimidation and propaganda.
* Bring truth directly to the people who need it most.
