John,
I just introduced my first bill of the 119th Congress — the Department of Education Protection Act — to shield the federal agency from efforts to dismantle it and ensure every student receives the free and appropriate public education they deserve.
In 1979, President Jimmy Carter oversaw the creation of the modern U.S. Department of Education, an accomplishment hailed as a hallmark of his legacy after his death.
The Department is vital for providing equal educational opportunity for all and protecting the rights of students. As a teacher, I have seen how the Department of Education makes public education possible & supports students every day.
During the 2024 campaign, the incoming Administration repeatedly vowed to “close” the agency if they regained power. Several members of Congress have also led legislation to abolish and defund the Dept of Education.
As an educator, I know the Department of Education ensures consistent protections for the rights of all students. Given this troubling rhetoric, it felt necessary to show my unequivocal support for public education.
Add your name to become a citizen co-sponsor of my legislation to protect the Department of Education. Together, we will fend off attempts to abolish the agency and make sure public education is secured nationwide.
Public education is important because it provides young people with the skills and knowledge they need to participate in society and the economy and helps to develop informed and engaged citizens.
The Department of Education is a vital part of that work. Instead of depleting the agency of its resources, we must invest in its ability to promote student achievement, foster education excellence, and ensure equal access.
This begins with investing more — not less — into our children.
Add your name to become a citizen co-sponsor of the Department of Education Protection Act today.
Ever grateful,
Jahana
