Email from Los Angeles Police Protective League Daily News & Updates Law Enforcement News Suspect identified after 7 San Antonio Police officers injured in late-night shootout The suspect that was killed during a shootout that injured seven San Antonio Police officers late Wednesday night on Far North Side has been identified. Law enforcement sources confirm that the suspect is 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos. Several other officers tried to approach the apartment, but were met with gunfire. Six other officers were either shot or injured by shrapnel during the shootout. The officers were either taken to the hospital or treated at the scene. All seven officers are expected to make a full recovery. The officers involved have between four and eight years of service. News4 San Antonio Police search for shooting suspect that left 6 people injured in Westlake District Los Angeles Police Department officers are searching for a suspect involved in an early Wednesday morning shooting in the Westlake District, where gunshot wounds injured six people. Police responded just before 1 a.m. at Wilshire Boulevard and South Alvarado Street to the shooting incident. Three victims are in stable condition, and three others are in critical condition. All of the victims were taken to the hospital for treatment. The shootings are gang-related, according to LAPD. CBS 2 Shooting investigation underway in downtown LA A shooting investigation is underway in downtown Los Angeles Wednesday morning. According to authorities, officers from the LAPD's Central station responded to a shots fired call on Maple Ave. and 6th Street. The condition of the shooting victim is not known. Streets in the area are closed as the investigation continues. No other information was immediately available. FOX 11 2 Plead Not Guilty to Charges Related to Johnny Wactor’s Murder Two men pleaded not guilty Wednesday to murder and attempted robbery charges stemming from the killing of former “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor, who was shot as he came upon a group of people trying to steal the catalytic converter from his parked car in downtown Los Angeles. Robert Isaiah Barceleau and Sergio Estrada, both 18, were ordered Jan. 7 to stand trial on one count each of murder and attempted second-degree robbery stemming from the May 25, 2024, attack on the 37-year-old actor, and one count of grand theft involving the alleged removal of catalytic converter from another vehicle within two miles and less than a half-hour before Wactor’s killing. Barceleau is also facing a special circumstance allegation of murder during the commission of a robbery, along with allegations that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury and death to Wactor. Barceleau and Estrada are also facing allegations filed last month that the crime was committed for the benefit of a criminal street gang, while Estrada is facing an allegation that someone involved in the crime personally and intentionally discharged a firearm causing great bodily injury and death. MyNewsLA Three Men Charged With Pandering Near Figueroa Corridor Three men have been charged with pandering involving alleged sexual exploitation along the Figueroa Corridor, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Wednesday. Derran Adkins, 27, of Paramount, is charged with one felony count each of human trafficking of a minor for a commercial sex act by force, fear, fraud or threat of injury and human trafficking of an adult, along with allegations that he personally inflicted great bodily injury during the commission of the crimes, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The alleged crimes involving Adkins — who is facing sentencing under the state’s three strikes law if he is convicted — occurred between last Nov. 4 and this Jan. 3, prosecutors said. Fabian Gilbert, 20, of Los Angeles, is charged with one felony count each of pandering and possession of a firearm by a felon involving alleged crimes last Dec. 27, along with an allegation that he committed a new felony offense while out on bail, according to the District Attorney’s Office. MyNewsLA Temecula man re-arrested in Los Angeles eight months after deadly hit-and-run crash More than eight months after a child was killed in a violent hit-and-run crash in Temecula, authorities have finally re-arrested the suspect. The crash happened back on May 26, 2024 at around 7 p.m., when deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Butterfield Stage Road and Channel Street, according to a statement from the Riverside County Sheriff's Office at the time. Upon arrival, they found the violent wreckage left behind by the crash, which involved four cars and left seven people with injuries. Four of those victims were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, where one, only identified as a boy, later died. "Preliminary findings revealed the vehicle traveling southbound on Butterfield Stage Road entered the intersection against a red signal, as the other vehicle entered the intersection on a green signal traveling westbound on Channel Street," the RSO statement from May 2024 said. CBS 2 Two men caught on security camera stealing fire equipment from the U.S. Forest Service in Southern California Authorities are trying to identify and locate two men who were caught on security footage stealing fire equipment from a U.S. Forest Service vehicle in San Bernardino County. On Jan. 17, at around 3:30 a.m., two men in a red two-door Jeep Wrangler pulled into the parking lot of a Hilton Inn Express on Milliken Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, according to a news release from the U.S. Forest Service’s San Bernardino National Forest division. The men parked near a San Bernardino National Forest Engine 336, which was assigned to be prepared for emergencies during the Santa Ana wind event, officials said. The men got out of their car and forced open three locked compartments in the U.S. Forest Service vehicle, taking fire equipment and putting it into their Jeep. The men then drove away, turning onto Milliken Avenue and onto Fifth Street, according to authorities. The two were described as between 5’7” to 6’0” in height. One had a thin mustache, medium to large build and wore a red jacket and black knit hat. The other was wearing a blue baseball cap, a blue long-sleeve shirt and jeans. Their Jeep had a California license plate beginning with the number 6, tan seats and a black soft top. Los Angeles Times U.S. border patrol agent fatally shot in Vermont A U.S. Border Patrol agent was fatally shot Monday on a highway in northern Vermont south of the Canadian border, authorities said. The death was confirmed by the FBI and Benjamine Huffman, acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security in Washington. In a statement, the FBI said that in addition to the agent, a suspect in the shooting was killed and a second suspect was injured and taken into custody during the encounter on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles (32 km) from the Canadian border. The FBI said there was no ongoing threat to the public. Huffman said the death occurred “in the line of duty.” The identity of the agent, who was assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector, was not immediately released. The sector encompasses Vermont and parts of New York and New Hampshire. Federal authorities did not provide additional details but said they would be released as they became available. Associated Press Teen shooter kills fellow student, himself at a Nashville high school, police say A female student was killed and another was wounded Wednesday in a shooting in a Nashville high school cafeteria, police said. The 17-year-old shooter, who was also a student at Antioch High School, later shot and killed himself, Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron said during a news conference. The student who was injured in the shooting suffered a graze wound, Aaron said. A spokesperson for Vanderbilt University Medical Center told TV station News 2 that another student was taken to Vanderbilt Pediatrics for treatment of an eye injury that happened after the shooting. Aaron said two school resource officers in the building were not near the cafeteria where the shooting took place, and by the time they got there the attacker had used a handgun to kill himself. The school, with about 2,000 students, is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Nashville. At a hospital being used as a reunification center, officials were helping parents to get back with their children as they were bused in from the school. Los Angeles Times Public Safety News Woman hit by car remains unidentified in Los Angeles hospital Health officials asked the public for help Wednesday identifying a patient who has been hospitalized in Los Angeles for more than a week after being struck by a car. The woman believed to be in her 50s was brought to Los Angeles General Medical Center on Jan. 14, but officials have been unable to locate any friends or family members who can identify her. She weighs 143 pounds and is about 5 feet 1 inch tall with salt and pepper-colored medium-length hair and brown eyes, the L.A. County Department of Health Services stated in a news release. The unidentified woman “was involved in an auto vs. pedestrian accident,” the news release read but gave no further details about the incident. KTLA 5 Hughes Fire in LA County explodes to over 9,200 acres near Castaic, with tens of thousands urged to evacuate With high winds driving the flames, a fast-moving wildfire exploded to more than 9,200 acres near the Los Angeles County community of Castaic Wednesday — prompting mandatory evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people. The Hughes Fire broke out around 10:45 a.m. near Castaic Lake, off Lake Hughes Road just north of Castaic Reservoir Road, before growing to 500 acres within an hour, authorities said. By 12:30 p.m., less than two hours after first being reported, it had ripped through a total of 3,407 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. By 6 p.m., the fire had more than doubled in size — spreading to an estimated 9,200 acres, according to the LA County Fire Department. Firefighters say that they have not discovered any burned structures and that while the weather conditions were driving the blaze, they were not as severe as the wildfires from earlier this month. However, Angeles National Forest Chief Robert Garcia stressed that the conditions were still critical. "The first responders are doing great work to contain this fire. NBC 4 Local Government News LA City Council Creates Special Committee Focusing on Fire Recovery The Los Angeles City Council established a special committee Wednesday to guide the wildfire recovery effort in a “swift, equitable and sustainable manner.” In a unanimous vote, the council approved a motion to form the Ad Hoc Windstorm and Wildfire Recovery Committee, which will lead all aspects of the city’s recovery and rebuilding. The motion was introduced by Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, Councilwoman Traci Park and Councilman Bob Blumenfield. “Our hillsides were charred. Businesses that housed the entrepreneurial spirit of our city had been reduced to rubble. Homes, which just the night before had provided respite and peace, are gone,” Park said. Park represents the 11th District, which includes Pacific Palisades. As of Wednesday, the Palisades Fire had reached 68% containment and the death toll stood at 11.
