It’s clear states will be pivotal to the anti-Trump resistance.
John,
Less than 72 hours into his second term, Donald Trump has been busy — attacking our rights and democracy.
In the last three days, Trump and his administration:
- Announced large-scale ICE raids in major cities across the country.
- Issued a blanket pardon to more than 1,000 January 6th insurrectionists, including the far-right militia leaders of the Proud Boys, Oathkeepers, and those charged with violently attacking law enforcement that day.
- Restored the use of capital punishment at the federal level.
- Scrubbed all references to "abortion" on the federal HHS.gov website.
- Reversed a Biden-era executive order that lowered the cost of prescription drugs for millions on Medicare — proving that his campaign pledges to lower costs for ordinary Americans to be nothing more than another lie.
- Withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO).
- And issued an unconstitutional executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship.
John, we know all of this sounds really bad. And we won't lie — it is.
But that doesn’t mean we’re taking any of this sitting down.
Blue states have been preparing since the end of the 2024 election to thwart the most extreme parts of Trump’s far-right agenda.
Governors and state legislatures have been diligently working to protect state-level institutions and laws that protect everything from voting rights to reproductive freedom — and are continuing to protect the progress we’ve made in environmental conservation and resolving gun violence.
Already, states and organizations across the country are starting to fight back against Trump’s hateful attacks on our communities and democracy.
After moving to end birthright citizenship, 22 states sued the Trump administration over this flagrantly unconstitutional move — the first of what is likely to be many legal fights.
With no Republican willing to restrain Trump at the federal level, it’s clear that states will be pivotal to leading the anti-Trump resistance.
We know it's easy to feel discouraged and angry right now, John.
It’s clear that if Democrats seek to regain power in 2026 and 2028, it’s imperative that they show voters across the nation that they’re working for them — and organize around an agenda that centers working class people. That is the only way we will defeat the MAGA right going forward.
We know this email was long and a lot to get through, John. If you made it this far, thank you for reading. Wherever you are, we hope you and your loved ones are taking care of yourselves.
More to come soon on how we’re mobilizing for the fights ahead. Thank you for being a part of the battle for our future.
In solidarity,
— LeftNet
