John, we’re just a few days into the new administration and Common Cause is on high alert.
Almost immediately after swearing to defend our Constitution and our way of life, Trump directly attacked it instead – illegally trying to end birthright citizenship and pardoning 1,500 January 6th insurrectionists.
And he’s promised even more outlandish moves for the coming weeks – ICE raids against our neighbors in dozens of cities, starting trade wars with Mexico and Canada, even trying to buy Greenland.
But here’s the problem with Donald Trump – it's impossible to tell what’s just bluster, and what he plans to follow through on.
What I do know is that he’s moving quickly – and this is just the beginning. In the first 100 days of the Trump administration, we expect a flurry of attacks against our civil rights, our communities, and our democracy.
But let me be clear: Common Cause will not waver. We will oppose any action that threatens the values you and I believe in.
During the first Trump administration, you helped us do exactly that. Together, we shut down the Pence-Kobach voter suppression commission, defended the Mueller investigation against partisan attacks, and upheld our right to vote by mail during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We have a big job ahead of us. On the federal level, we’ll be pushing on the co-equal legislative branch and Supreme Court to act as a check and balance to Trump’s administration. On the state level, we’ll be using the power of federalism to defend our values and demonstrate the resilience of our democracy.
Here’s where you come in – we’re asking members like you to let us know what you’re paying attention to in the first 100 days of the new administration – to ensure our priorities are aligned with yours and that we’re prepared for any challenge they throw at us.
Will you take a few minutes and complete our survey?
John, American democracy must – and will – survive for the next generation. I’m confident we’re up to the challenge.
I look forward to reading your response,
Daryl Lobban, Senior Vice President of External Affairs
and the Team and Common Cause
