I don’t have to tell you that the rent is too damn high in New York City, John.

We’ve got young people who can barely afford to rent a room here (on average, Gen Z renters spend more than 30% of their income on housing costs).

And we’ve got a generation of retirees and empty nesters in need of economic security. Studies show that more than half of baby boomers are at risk of a retirement shortfall.

So here’s one thing I’ll do as Mayor of New York City: I will add 10,000 new rooms to New York City’s rental housing stock with a housing share program.

We’ll connect homeowners with extra space to those looking for a room on a month-to-month basis.

How do we get this done? New York City already has a room share program like this — but on a small scale. As Mayor, I’ll ramp it up big time.

We’ll partner with shared housing matching apps — like PadSplit, Hello Housing, and SpareRoom — so that folks can share their space in a secure and accountable way.

It’ll be like Airbnb, but for New York City tenants at prices we can actually afford. We’re not going to roll back Airbnb regulations to cater to out-of-towners and tourists. My plan puts New Yorkers first.

And remember, a home share program isn’t a silver bullet to fix the entirety of the housing crisis. We also need to dramatically increase the pace of affordable housing development, increase tenant protections, and create new models that make affordable home ownership possible.

My program will be a creative solution that helps chip away at the housing crisis and put more money in New Yorkers’ pockets. It’ll strengthen connection and combat loneliness across generations. And it will help ensure that more New Yorkers than ever before have a safe and affordable place to live — using the housing we already know exists.

Please chip in $10 or any amount you can to my campaign for Mayor — so we can tackle the housing crisis and other problems New Yorkers are dealing with. Together, we can come up with creative, common-sense solutions and achieve safe, affordable housing for all. [[link removed]]
