Resolution Demanding Governor Newsom Allow Orange County to Fully Transition Out of Stay at Home Restrictions

ORANGE COUNTY, CA - Hon. Fred M. Whitaker, Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, released the following statement:

“The Central Committee of the Republican Party of Orange County unanimously passed a Resolution Demanding Governor Newsom Allow Orange County to Fully Transition Out of Stay at Home Restrictions.

Orange County residents have done their part to flatten the curve by closing their small businesses, social distancing, and avoiding nonessential travel for over 2 months. As a result, our hospitals were not overwhelmed and our ventilator stock remain largely unused. Fewer than 248 hospital beds out of our county's 6,000 available have been used on any given day, and contrary to the Governor's dire prediction of hospital overcrowding, we have seen the opposite effect, where hospitals are laying off staff due to a lack of need.

Governor Newsom created a one-size-fits-all plan for the entire state of California that was based off of wildly inaccurate models. At one point, he projected that more than half of our state's population would have this virus. This is clearly far off from what has actually transpired. The Governor reacted harshly and directly targeted Orange County leaders when they voted to open our beaches. His decision was politically motivated, not science-based. In a similar manner, he is insistent that his plans for reopening the economy supersede those of local leaders, who are far more equipped to understand the situation in their communities. The standards continue to be arbitrary, and residents of our state and county are left reading vague and sometimes conflicting guidance, with little idea of when they can get back to life. A prime example of that was this weekend when the Governor approved Orange County to move further into Stage 2 for retail, dine in restaurants, and offices, and partial
opening of churches. The rules are still overbearing, contradict county rules and really show that the Governor does not understand how businesses or churches operate.

On the other hand, nearly four weeks ago, the Orange County Board of Supervisors crafted a plan that was smart, responsible, and created with the best interests of OC residents in mind. Their plan would allow for the reopening of our economy and community spaces in a safe and responsible manner.

The move to Stage 2 for business and partial reopening of churches is a step in the right direction, but Orange County must get to Stages 3 and 4 as soon as possible. We will continue to support our local leaders and their work to put pressure on the Governor, further open our county, and return to normalcy.

The Republican Party of Orange County office will reopen today for staff with proper safety precautions in place. A PDF of our new COVID-19 Office Safety Policy is available for download. But we must get to the place where our volunteers can safely work together and we are allowed to freely assemble under the First Amendment to seek redress from our Government.”
