Dual smoking and vaping on the rise in England, study finds

The number of adults in England who both smoke and vape has risen, with researchers highlighting that dual use is often part of a transition towards quitting smoking entirely. A study conducted by University College London found that the proportion of dual users increased from 3.5% in 2016 to 5.2% in 2024.

Data revealed significant growth in dual use among younger adults, where almost 60% of young smokers now also vape. Patterns indicate a shift from frequent smoking to more regular vaping, suggesting that vaping may support smokers in reducing cigarette consumption. However, researchers raised concerns about misconceptions regarding the relative harms of vaping and smoking, which may deter some from using vapes and quitting cigarettes entirely.

Hazel Cheeseman, Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health emphasised the importance of clear public messaging on the health benefits of switching fully from smoking to vaping, along with sustained government investment in cessation programmes to achieve long-term reductions in smoking rates.

Obesity drugs offer mixed results with notable benefits and risks

Drugs like Ozempic, originally developed for diabetes, have gained attention for their broader health benefits, including weight loss and reduced risks of heart disease, stroke, and Alzheimer’s. New research analysing data from nearly 2 million individuals reveals these medications also lower the likelihood of addiction and psychotic disorders. However, the research identified that these drugs come with risks, including increased chances of arthritis and severe pancreatitis.

Scotland’s health agency criticises gambling regulation and calls for independent inquiry

Public Health Scotland (PHS) has criticised Westminster’s handling of gambling regulation, alleging that tax revenues and industry donations have created conflicts of interest that hinder efforts to address gambling-related harm. PHS have said that the harm causing industries such as the tobacco, gambling and ultra-processed food and drinks industries use financial and political ties, alongside the framing of these issues as a socially acceptable leisure activity, to impede research and policy development.

The agency identified an increase in gambling harm, particularly among young people, with problem gambling rates doubling in adolescents. PHS advocates for an impartial investigation to guide public health policy, citing concerns about the reliance of charities on gambling proceeds and the industry's influence through lobbying and donations.

While Westminster defends its evidence-based approach, critics argue that entrenched industry interests continue to shape regulation. PHS stresses the need for independent oversight to address the health and societal impacts of gambling.

Editorial note: Media stories covering prevention of ill-health are being included in ASH Daily News because policy change in these areas is indicative of the Government’s position on prevention and their attitudes to harm-causing industries. The government have introduced a levy on the gambling industry which will generate an estimated £100 million for research, prevention and treatment of gambling harm. ASH have called for a similar levy to be placed on the tobacco industry.
