On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court made history with Roe v. Wade, establishing a woman’s constitutional right to make decisions about her own body, including the right to an abortion. Nearly 50 years later, in 2022, the Court overturned the landmark decision, stripping away this fundamental right. On the anniversary, let's take a look at the progress, the setbacks, and the ongoing fight for reproductive freedom.
In 2025, here’s the current state of abortion rights:
- About 1 in 3 women live in states where abortion is banned.

Black and Native women are disproportionately impacted, with 60% living in states with bans and restrictions — mostly in the South and Midwest.
- Nearly 20% of patients have been forced to travel hundreds of miles across state lines to receive abortion care.
And, since the Supreme Court reversed Roe v. Wade in 2022, at least 19 states have banned or restricted abortion access. Just take a look: |
But we fought back! Although patients may still experience difficulty accessing abortion care in states without a ban, these ballot measures provided more than 11 million women with new or stronger state protections. Voters in 13 states have taken action to protect abortion rights at the ballot box. Arizona, California, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, and Vermont made their voices heard and protected abortion access. And, in Florida, a majority of voters (57%) voted in support of abortion access during November’s election but fell short of the state’s 60% threshold needed to pass.
