52 years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled that the right to choose was
protected by the Constitution.
And then, two and a half years ago, a very different, far-right Supreme
Court overturned that decision, effectively criminalizing abortion in many
states around the country.
We won this fight in 1973, and that should have been the end of it. Since
then, nations around the world have recognized the fundamental freedom of
choice. But we’ve taken a massive step backwards, and countless women are
already paying for it with their lives.
Today makes me think back to an event that we held at a senior center in
Montgomery County. I saw on the faces of those who remember the realities
of life before Roe the horror and disbelief that we’re being forced to
fight the same battles that they thought they’d won decades ago.
It’s just a matter of time before Trump’s radicalized majority tries to
force a total abortion ban through Congress. But my daughter — and all of
our daughters — deserve to grow up in a world with more rights, not fewer.
I’m asking you to join me in this fight for our most fundamental rights. I
won’t deny there’s a long road ahead of us, but we’ve won this battle
before, and I know together we can win it again.
In solidarity,
Angela Alsobrooks
