*EGLE announces Michigan Coastal Management Program’s 2025 Grant Awards*

The Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) announced today more than $334,268.28 in 2025 Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) grants.  These funds will lead to 11 grant projects that help support the efforts of coastal communities, non‑profit organizations, regional council of governments, and conservation districts to protect, preserve, restore, enhance, and wisely develop our coastal resources along the longest freshwater coastline in the nation.

Here are the recipients of the 2025 MCMP grant awards:

* *Michigan Association of Planning: *$41,200.00 to create a compendium of solutions, resources, resilience planning templates, and local policies into an easy‑to‑use digital publication and webpage and conduct in‑person clinics on the model zoning ordinances recommended in the compendium.
* *Charter Township of Alpena: *$11,250.00 to update their Master Plan with a chapter dedicated to coastal issues and increasing community resiliency.
* *Van Buren Conservation District: *$12,350.00 to conduct outreach and education on coastal resilience for residents in South Haven, South Haven Charter Township, and Covert Township.  A Dune Day will be hosted at Covert Park where attendees can walk the beach with a expert and learn about the importance of dunes, how dunes have changed over time, factors impacting dunes, and how dunes contribute to a resilient coast.
* *Tip of the Mitt: *$8,456.00 to increase knowledge of shoreline issues and water quality protection through the development of resource guides for shoreline homeowners and realtors and technical trainings such as realtor workshops and the MCMP Coastal Leadership Academy workshop.
* *East Michigan Council of Governments: *$25,836.00 to host six (6) Coastal Leadership Academy workshops in the region and work with local municipalities to review their respective local Hazard Mitigation Plans, Capital Improvement Plans, Parks Plans, and Master Plans.  The review of these documents will identify potential projects to mitigate damages resulting from future events and integrated into the East Michigan Council of Governments Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy.
* *Northeast Michigan Council of Governments: *$61,307.00 to help increase the resiliency of coastal communities in northeast Michigan by assisting with identification of coastal issues, identification of best management practices (BMPs) for addressing those issues, assist with implementing those BMPs through technical assistance and grant writing, and host one (1) MCMP Coastal Leadership Academy workshop.
* *Village of Elk Rapids: *$27,000.00 to develop the Elk River Corridor Feasibility Study for erosion control measures, native riparian vegetation restoration, and sustainable public access enhancements.  Enhancements will focus on natural bioengineering techniques including incorporating native plant species and enhanced public access sites with minimal environmental impact.
* *City of Grand Haven: *$45,000.00 to develop and install educational exhibit displays at the South Pier Entrance lighthouse.  The displays will be dedicated to the local United States Coast Guard Station presence and history, the South Pier catwalk and lights, the West Michigan and Southwest Michigan Underwater Preserves, accounts of the various lighthouse keepers, and more.
* *City of New Baltimore: *$17,345.00 to develop planning and engineering designs for a naturalized shoreline to replace a failing vertical seawall at Walter and Mary Burke Park located along Anchor Bay in Lake St. Clair.  The shoreline naturalization project will protect the shoreline from further erosion resulting from high lake water levels and severe weather events.
* *Economic Development Corporation of the City of Detroit: *$47,025.00 to conduct soil sampling in accordance with the approved Survey Plan at vacant land in the Jefferson Village subdivision.  The results will help inform the final design and construction plans for the project, which are expected to include walkways, natural features, green space, bioretention areas, and rain gardens.
* *City of Alpena: *$37,500.00 to implement a suite of nature‑based solutions to improve coastal habitat and address stormwater runoff in two (2) popular city parks.  The overarching goal is to address stormwater runoff issues, to improve natural habitat, and to re‑naturalize the Lake Huron shoreline.
