Today should have marked 52 years of celebrating Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion. Instead, we’re facing a stark reality: the federal right to an abortion no longer exists, and extremist Republicans are working harder than ever to strip away reproductive freedom state by state.

In Ohio, the battle over abortion has been a saga, to say the least. We passed an amendment to protect abortion rights in the Ohio Constitution and prevent laws like Attorney General Dave Yost’s 6-week ban from taking effect.

But GOP extremists have refused to accept that Ohioans overwhelmingly voted to protect abortion rights, and they’ve been trying to ban them again ever since.

Yost just recently appealed the decision in court that struck down his ban—he’s trying to game the system, arguing that even though Ohioans passed Issue 1, his 6-week ban should remain.

We saw how dangerous the first GOP ban was—Ohioans had to be sent out of state for care. Women in hospitals were facing life-threatening situations. Doctors had to face a harsh reality: losing their patient or their license.

We won’t go back.
