Trump issues sweeping pardons and commutations for Jan. 6 rioters

John, it’s hard to overstate how devastating and destructive these January 6 pardons and sentence commutations are.

The attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was a violent assault on American democracy and the rule of law–an attempt to install into power by force the loser of a popular election. Thousands of January 6th insurrectionists, after trials with ample evidence, were convicted of criminal offenses, in some cases violent or extremely serious offenses, for their role in the insurrection.

Pardoning those who participated in the insurrection sends a message that the right of the people to choose our own leaders no longer matters, because the results can merely be overturned by force.

It also makes it clear where Trump stands on the insurrection. Many of the people who attacked the Capitol said they did it because they thought they had Trump’s support.

And now, he just made it clear that they did.

John, Donald Trump incited an insurrection after he lost the 2020 election and refused to accept the results. His pardon of the supporters he encouraged to engage in violence raises a terrifying question: what happens if Trump doesn’t want to leave the White House at the end of his term?

Donald Trump is an insurrectionist, a convicted felon, the most corrupt president in history and a threat to our democracy–an even bigger threat in his second term. We have to be prepared to do the necessary work to protect the future of democracy in our country. That’s why I’m asking for your support today.

Voters had the chance to decide whether they wanted Trump as president in 2020. He lost, then attacked our democracy because he didn't like the result of the election.

Trump played a role in the violent insurrection that threatened our democracy–he was even impeached (for a second time) for inciting the insurrection.

The framers of the 14th Amendment knew that anyone who had done that couldn't be in power again.

That’s why we sued to remove Donald Trump from the ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. We believed then, just as we do today, that he is ineligible to hold office for his role in the January 6th insurrection.

The Supreme Court and the Senate could have prevented a man who incited a violent insurrection and continues to lie about the 2020 election from getting close to the presidency ever again.

But they didn't. Now, our democracy is in danger.
