John — Donald Trump was sworn in around 12 PM on Monday. By 8:30 PM, he had already attacked me by name during his first Q&A at the Oval Office. John, I figured Trump would continue to come after me. I just didn’t think it would happen this soon. Especially when there are far more pressing matters to focus on than his enemies list. Why focus on me on day one? It’s not completely clear, but it may have to do with my questioning of Pam Bondi, his nominee for Attorney General. I asked her if she would commit to preserving the evidence from the January 6th investigation — she wouldn’t. I asked her if there was any factual basis to investigate Liz Cheney or Jack Smith — she refused to answer. I asked her if she would review every January 6 pardon application before Trump issued a blanket pardon and she was indignant that she would — she didn’t. Perhaps worst of all, he pardoned and commuted the sentences of the January 6 insurrectionists, members of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers just to name a few — handing them all a literal “Get Out of Jail Free” card to the very people who stormed the Capitol, threatened violence against elected leaders, and attacked heroic law enforcement agents with baseball bats. He also used his first day in office to attack immigrants and working families, to cut back on climate protections, and to rescind the Biden Administration’s efforts to lower prescription drug costs. The work to protect our Constitution during his second term begins now. The work to restore our rights and freedoms begins now. The work to hold Trump and his allies again accountable to the rule of law and to the will of the American people begins now.
