** The Immigration Crackdown, the Laken Riley Act, and how to help
------------------------------------------------------------
In his first day in office, Trump issued a flurry of executive orders that amounted to a brutal crackdown against immigrants, both documented and undocumented. They include an end to birthright citizenship, empowerment of ICE to separate families and detain people with even fewer guardrails than before, targeting sanctuary cities, and more.

To immediately jump into helping, start with remembering the immigration activists’ motto: Power not Panic! Concentrate on actions that actually help, not spreading fear.

1. Report your own sightings of ICE activity to your local hotline ([link removed]) . (Claims on social media don’t count and are especially dangerous to immigrant communities, causing panic and preventing people from going about their business, which makes them even more vulnerable.)
2. Learn and promulgate your rights against ICE. Get some ILRC Red Cards ([link removed]) and hand them out.
3. Pressure your local officials to refuse compliance and information-sharing with ICE.
1. Call your Members of Congress ([link removed]) and tell them: Thank you for voting NO on the Laken Riley Act and to unite Democrats against Trump’s agenda.
2. Call Governor Newsom ([link removed]) and Mayor Lurie ([link removed]) and tell them: DO NOT COLLABORATE with federal immigration enforcement.
4. Donate to and participate in local mutual-aid efforts such as handing out food and repairing tail lights, as these can help immigrants survive and help prevent contact with the police. NorCal Resist ([link removed]) is a great organization handling this work in our area.

A full explainer on the EOs is available here ([link removed]) .

Unfortunately, these awful executive orders are now supported by legislation as well. The House passed the Laken Riley Act, H.R. 29 ([link removed]) , and the Senate passed its version, S. 5 ([link removed]) . All four of our Members of Congress voted against it. However, 12 Senate Democrats voted with Republicans to pass this incredibly dangerous bill that does a lot to legalize the extrajudicial tactics of detention ICE has used on vulnerable people in the past. We are outraged by their betrayal. Some of them were Democrats we fought hard to elect over the past four years, and it is a huge disappointment to see them collaborating with fascism. They are:
* Catherine Cortez Masto—Nevada
* John Fetterman—Pennsylvania (co-sponsor)
* Ruben Gallego—Arizona (co-sponsor)
* Maggie Hassan—New Hampshire
* Mark Kelly—Arizona
* Jon Ossoff—Georgia
* Gary Peters—Michigan
* Jacky Rosen—Nevada
* Jeanne Shaheen—New Hampshire
* Elissa Slotkin—Michigan
* Mark Warner—Virginia
* Raphael Warnock—Georgia

If you know someone in these Senators’ constituency, have them call the senator(s) listed above for their state and let them know about your disappointment!

** We are no longer active on Twitter
------------------------------------------------------------
As of today, we have locked our Twitter account. We’ve been planning this move for some time, and our departure date has arrived ([link removed]) —in part motivated by Elon Musk’s Nazi salute ([link removed]) on Monday.

You can follow us on numerous other forms of social media ([link removed]) . Additionally, we have RSS feeds and this very newsletter.

** Mass Call to Oppose Trump’s Nominees
------------------------------------------------------------
We know not to expect any good nominees from Trump, but we should still talk about the horrible specifics of his current picks.

Trump has nominated several conspiracy theorists and otherwise odious people to positions in his administration: Kash Patel for the FBI, Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, RFK Jr for Director of HHS, and other dangerous, extreme, and unqualified individuals for no other reason than their willingness to cover for Trump, his billionaire friends, and their deep-pocketed interests while targeting Trump’s perceived enemies.

These nominations raise serious concerns about public safety, national security, and urgent challenges like the opioid crisis. It is vital that our Senators ensure a fair and transparent confirmation process.
Conducting this process openly and without undue political interference strengthens the credibility of our institutions and demonstrates a commitment to good governance. Our Senators’ responsibility is to reject these reckless nominations and oppose these blatant efforts by Trump to exploit the government for his benefit.

We need to impress on our Members of Congress that rubber-stamping Trump’s nominees, as they did with now-Secretary Marco Rubio, is not acceptable. We need Democrats to put up more of a fight. If we want to retake the House and Senate in two years, Democrats must be seen as opposed to the MAGA Republican agenda, not helping make it happen.

Call your Senators ([link removed]) and tell them: Oppose Trump’s nominees!

** Which Supervisor district are you in? Let us know!
------------------------------------------------------------
We want to know which districts our members are in. Fill out this Google form ([link removed]) so we can find out which Supervisors we need to focus on for our local work!

**
ADEM is upon us: Register to vote in it today
------------------------------------------------------------
Every two years, Democrats across California vote to elect the delegates who will represent them in the California Democratic Party. That time is upon us once again.

The process is called the Assembly Delegate Election Meeting ([link removed]) , or ADEM. We wrote in late 2020 about what the ADEM is for and how it helps build power ([link removed]) .

Each Assembly district will get to elect 14 delegates. As of today, you can now register to vote in the ADEM election ([link removed]) , either online or in-person. You have until noon on Friday, January 24 to register to vote online, or until 6 PM on Sunday, February 23 to register for in-person voting. In-person voting will happen Saturday and Sunday, February 22–23 at locations up and down the state ([link removed]) .
