Dear Neighbors,

I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone who attended our town hall meeting recently at the Rosemount Library. Your participation made this event a success. We are currently planning a future town hall meeting. Your presence is invaluable, and I wholeheartedly encourage all of you to join us again.

In response to emails both supportive and non supportive of denying quorum, I’d like to acknowledge that there is much misinformation circulating about what is actually happening at the Capitol in St. Paul and I would like to provide the facts around actions taken on both sides.

It is most unfortunate that the GOP leadership set the stage for our hard, yet necessary, decision to deny quorum. It was the last tool I had hoped we wouldn’t have to use in order to uphold the integrity of our democratic process. The multiple threats by GOP leadership to overturn the election of a duly elected member (and possibly more) to the House is a threat to every member regardless if you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent.

The intentional actions taken by the GOP were deemed not valid by the Secretary of State in his press statement [ [link removed] ] on January 14, 2025. Further, Secretary of State Simon sent to both DFL and GOP leadership on January 10, 2025 a letter [ [link removed] ] where he clarifies that House rules require 68 legislators to conduct business as set forth in our State Constitution and previously upheld in law. This matter has now been sent to the Supreme Court [ [link removed] ] for adjudication. I am optimistic about a quick resolution.

Meanwhile, it’s been a week since a district court judge ruled [ [link removed] ] that DFL Rep. Brad Tabke of Shakopee “remains the candidate with the most votes legally cast” in the election and that “there is no basis in fact or law for holding a special election.” It is both my duty and my responsibility to you and to every resident of this state to uphold the highest democratic principles in our state constitution. Please keep in mind, each House seat belongs to the people of Minnesota, and each representative is the voice of approximately 42,500 residents. Taking the oath of office is not something I take lightly.

Despite the misinformation out there, I’ve been working in our district, meeting with stakeholders and constituents to draft legislation so we’re ready to go when we return to a 67-67 tied House.

Legislation for Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eagan

To combat the bad actors who exploit our youth and community organizations for personal gain, I’m authoring legislation that aims to establish stricter regulations on the handling of funds within youth organizations. The dedication of parents and volunteers who tirelessly raise money for these groups should not be undermined by the unethical actions of a single individual. We must ensure that financial oversight protects the interests of our youth.

Additionally, I’m working on legislation related to the challenges for folks living in homeowner associations, particularly addressing the issues impacting senior citizens. In situations where funds are mismanaged by unethical board members, Minnesotans living in associations face the consequences. That’s not right. It’s critical that we put more robust legal frameworks in place to hold these individuals accountable and ensure that funds are utilized appropriately. By enhancing our laws, we can foster an environment of trust and integrity within our communities, safeguarding the hard work and contributions of all who are involved.

*Keep in Touch*

Please continue to reach out with questions about the current situation; I’m happy to help clarify any confusion around what’s going on in the House.

Thank you for the honor of representing our Rosemount, Apple Valley, and Eagan neighbors in the Minnesota Legislature.

Stay warm,

John
