GPSR: What do I need to know?

The General Product Safety Regulation (or GPSR to its friends), which came into effect on 13 December 2024, is paralysing businesses that usually export to the EU or Northern Ireland.

If you have been affected by GPSR, we want to hear from you.

Hi John,

If the government wants to put money back in the pockets of ordinary people, it needs to take a serious look at how Brexit is holding back our businesses. Trying to grow the economy without undoing the damage of Boris Johnson's Brexit deal is like driving with the handbrake on.

Some of you may have heard of GPSR - especially if you're a business owner or exporter to the EU or Northern Ireland - but if you haven't, this is a new directive from the European Union to protect customers in the bloc from unsafe products. But as a third country, businesses in the UK now have to comply - adding new burdens for entrepreneurial Brits.

We have spent the previous few weeks talking to small business owners about the challenges they have been facing following the introduction of GPSR at the end of last year. And now we want to hear from you.

We've pulled together all the information we can find on GPSR, including FAQs and what British businesses need to know about the regulation.

Here's what you need to know

GPSR might be hobbling small businesses - but there could be a solution. An agreement on regulatory alignment with the EU may well reduce some of these new trade barriers. And here's how it could happen.

A UK-EU agreement on Mutual Recognition of Conformity Standards (MRCs) could drastically cut red tape - and it's not as complicated as it sounds. Read our explainer for more.

Yesterday, in the Business and Trade Select Committee, Nick Thomas-Symonds (Minister for EU Relations) confirmed that he was "open and pragmatic" to the idea of including MRCs in future negotiations with the EU (watch the clip).

Good news!

If you or your business has been affected by the new GPSR regulations, please let us know.

And we'll keep working to break down those Brexit trade barriers that are holding our economy back.

Best wishes,

Julia
