John,
As we’re gearing up for the new administration, we wanted to lay out what’s at stake in our fight ahead – especially with Medicaid.
Let’s talk about what’s at stake.
- Medicaid is a program that 80 MILLION people depend on to access their health care needs. That’s more than 1 in 5 people in the U.S. who are covered through Medicaid – people across the country, of all ages.
- Unlike Medicare, which is a completely federally-run program, Medicaid is jointly funded by federal and state governments, and cuts at the federal level would put pressure on states, none of which have the money to fill the gaps.
- Medicaid is a lifeline for millions of disabled people of all ages, older adults, family caregivers, and direct care workers – many of whom would have no access to health care without Medicaid.
- Medicaid is the primary payer of home and community-based services (HCBS), which allows older adults and disabled people to receive essential care in their own homes and communities. This is also something that, in most instances, Medicare will NOT cover.
- Because HCBS is an optional service for states to provide, these services are especially vulnerable to funding cuts or changes.
- While Medicaid covers the needs of many populations, including children, disabled people and older adults make up 1 in 5 enrollees and over half of Medicaid spending. So we have a bigger stake in protecting the program.
It is not possible to reduce funding to Medicaid without hurting disabled people and older adults.
Heard enough? If you’re ready to take action, send a message to your Congress member to protect Medicaid and our federal care programs!
I’m ready to take action!
We’ll be in touch in the weeks ahead with ways to get involved in this fight. We are stronger together. Thank you for everything you’re doing to help create a more caring world.
With care,
