Today marks 52 years since the Supreme Court issued its decision in Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to choose across the country until the court overturned this decision in 2022.
Since then, states across the country have passed extreme restrictions and even complete bans on critical reproductive healthcare.
Despite this, Maryland has stepped up to safeguard reproductive healthcare. The General Assembly has passed additional protections, and in 2023, I voted on the Board of Public Works to purchase nearly three years’ worth of mifepristone to ensure our residents have access to medical abortions. Last November, Marylanders overwhelmingly passed the Reproductive Freedom Referendum, which will safeguard reproductive rights in our state constitution for generations.
Last week, I was honored to witness the Governor certify the amendment to our state constitution protecting our reproductive rights. I was proud to campaign for Question 1 to pass this, and I’ll continue to do all I can to champion healthcare rights for all of us – including reproductive healthcare rights for women.
While we still have much work to do to protect reproductive healthcare across the country, I’m so proud of the progress we’ve made together to ensure Maryland is a state where healthcare and reproductive rights are protected and honored.
Onward,
Brooke
