Today would have been the 52nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade . Instead, we operate in a different reality: states have outlawed abortion care, women are dying from not being able to access the care they need, abortion providers, patients, and those who support them face targeted harassment and attacks, and our new president proudly claims responsibility for dismantling Roe .

The National Women’s Law Center launched the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund (Abortion Access LDF) in response to the legal chaos unleashed after the Supreme Court unjustly overturned Roe v. Wade . Now we face new threats from an extremist Congress, emboldened anti-abortion activists and hostile state officials, and the new president and his allies, including the architects of Project 2025. Project 2025 threatens to ban medication abortion nationwide, increase denials of abortion care, and expand federal surveillance of pregnant people. We need the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund more than ever to provide support against these threats by helping cover attorney’s fees and certain other legal expenses for financially strapped abortion patients, providers, and supporters. We are constantly evolving to address the harm created by overturning Roe and build on the areas where Roe wasn’t enough. In just two years, the Abortion Access Legal Defense Fund has helped cover legal costs facing abortion supporters, providers, and patients from all across the country, including in states that have banned or drastically limited the availability of abortion. These individuals and organizations have faced legal action against them because they had an abortion or helped someone get one—with crushing legal costs.
