1) Land Man

The intelligentsia are laughing at Donald Trump's idea of acquiring Greenland from Denmark.

Trump's argument is that Greenland is of strategic national security value to the U.S. He's also betting this giant island has other rare and undiscovered assets.

Does anyone remember Seward's Folly? This was the American acquisition of Alaska in 1867 by then-Secretary of State William Seward. The price tag was $7 million. That would be the equivalent of less than $1 billion today - or less than what Washington spends every day. Alaska is twice the size of Texas, so Russia practically gave it away to us.

Alaska was soon discovered to have vast quantities of gold in the Yukon and played a strategic role during World War II. Then the north slope of Alaska was discovered to have massive deposits of oil and gas worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

Seward also commissioned an 1868 report that concluded we should acquire Greenland.

For the first hundred years of our country all we did was acquire land to expand America's reach and achieve our manifest destiny. Most famous was Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase. Then we got Florida from Spain, added Texas as a free agent, then Oregon, and finally Hawaii. We bought most of this land for a tiny fraction of what it is worth today.

None of this was folly.

The residents of Greenland would be able to bequeath to their children one of the greatest assets on the planet - U.S. passports.

Could be a win-win.

2) Out of the Paris Climate Accord - Once and For All

One of our happiest and proudest moments this weekend was when President Trump signed an executive order pulling the U.S. out of the anti-America Paris Climate agreement ([link removed]) . This was the second time he has removed America from this ineffective quasi-treaty.

While the U.S. leveled off its carbon dioxide emissions, the biggest greenhouse gas emitter - China - dramatically increased theirs. See chart.

President Xi never had any intention to cut Chinese emissions - but the dupes in the EU and the greens in Britain fawned all over this duplicitous dictator. They were willing accomplices to the fraud of the Green New Deal. Ironically, the U.S. was one of the very few nations that actually met our targets - even though we had pulled out.

3) You're a Grand Old Flag

Here's a headline to warm the hearts of all patriotic Americans:

[link removed]

"Starting immediately, only the United States of America flag is authorized to be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestic and abroad, and featured in U.S. government content," the order states. "The flag of the United States of America united all Americans under the universal principles of justice, liberty, and democracy. These values, which are the bedrock of our great country, are shared by all American citizens, past and present." ...

"The U.S. flag is a powerful symbol of pride and it is fitting and respectful that only the U.S. flag be flown or displayed at U.S. facilities, both domestically and abroad," according to the policy memorandum.

4) Trump To Punish Chinese Intellectual Property Theft

Donald Trump issued a sweeping executive order ([link removed]) that requires U.S. agencies to "assess the status of United States intellectual property rights such as patents, copyrights, and trademarks" with China in order to "ensure reciprocal and balanced treatment."

U.S. firms and research bodies have long complained that Chinese firms steal their intellectual property at the direction of the Chinese government, which also frequently forces US companies into transfers of technology ([link removed]) , IP theft and the use of intimidation is an inherent feature of the Chinese Communist economic model.

Take Huawei, the giant Chinese telecom firm, which copied stolen technology, manuals, and know-how from Cisco Systems to build its empire. A Cisco lawsuit against Huawei was eventually settled out of court in Cisco's favor but after years of delay.

The Trump approach appears to go well beyond that. In addition to threatening recognition of Chinese patents, the U.S. will seek to check China's growing economic interests in strategic minerals in Latin America and Africa and strengthen US alliances with countries like India, Japan, and South Korea.

The Chinese have run roughshod over Western countries when it comes to intellectual property theft.

No more.

5) Quote of the Day

Stanley Druckenmiller:

I've been doing this for 49 years, and we're probably going from the most anti-business administration to the opposite. We do a lot of talking to CEOs and companies on the ground, and I'd say CEOs are somewhere between relieved and giddy.
