Earlier this month, the Supreme Court declined to hear Utah’s challenge to the federal government’s indefinite control over 18.5 million acres of land controlled by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The issue of control over public lands in the West is a perennial issue dating back to the Utah Enabling Act of 1894, and the topic continues to garner greater attention. The challengers have vowed to continue their fight in federal district court.

The U.S. is blessed with large federal landholdings that play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity, providing habitat for plants and animal species, and offering vital ecosystem services. Moreover, these same lands provide opportunities for recreation, such as hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, and many other beneficial uses with substantial economic benefits to local communities.

The federal government’s total landholdings cover 640 million acres, constituting 30 percent of the U.S. land mass. For context, that is larger than all 26 states east of the Mississippi River combined. Less than 4 percent of land east of the Mississippi is controlled by the federal government, in contrast to 50 percent west of the Mississippi. Nationwide, BLM holds 245 million acres, followed by the U.S. Forest Service at 193 million acres and National Parks at 85 million acres. In Utah alone, public lands constitute 37.4 million acres (68 percent) of the state’s land mass.

Join us for this webinar on February 6 at 12 pm EST, designed to provide a better understanding of the history of public lands in the U.S. and the growing legal and policy debate over the federal government’s large landholdings. The discussion will also explore policy issues affecting wildlife and critical natural resources, as well as the social and economic implications to gateway communities.
