The Baltimore Banner headquarters in the city’s Inner Harbor on October 17, 2024. (Angela Fu/Poynter)

For a few years now, Baltimore has had something most metros don’t anymore — two newspapers.
One is The Baltimore Sun.
The other is, in fact, not a newspaper but an online news site that serves many of the same needs and audiences — the Baltimore Banner.
“The cautious optimism surrounding the situation came crashing down in the summer,” writes my colleague, Angela Fu, in a deep dive ([link removed]) into the two Baltimore newsrooms.
Her full story digs into the Sun and the Banner and what’s happening in each through new ownership at the Sun, growth at the Banner and the fight to build and maintain trust.
You can dig in here ([link removed]) .
At least one more newsroom that deserves our attention in Baltimore is the Baltimore Beat ([link removed]) . I wrote about the alt-weekly ([link removed]) back in 2022.
While you’re here:
* Last week I shared some Los Angeles-based journalists ([link removed]) who lost their homes to the wildfires there. One more to add to the list of GoFundMes: Lucie Russo ([link removed]〈=en_US&utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link) is the development events manager for Southern California Public Radio.
* Read how the newsroom AfroLA ([link removed]) is supporting the community there through the fires, from The Pivot Fund’s Tracie Powell.
* And just in time for the new year, here are SciLine’s Evidence-Based Reporting Tools and Tips. ([link removed])

That’s it for me. On Monday, I saw a lot of cheering, crying and grown men screaming and turning bright red, (and that was just on the third day of a volleyball tournament.) 😜
