The New York Attorney General's office has uncovered a fraudulent scheme where scammers stole over $2 million in cryptocurrency from individuals seeking remote job opportunities. Victims were contacted via unsolicited text messages, offering well-paying positions reviewing products online. To commence work, they were instructed to open cryptocurrency accounts and maintain specific balances.

Instead of receiving their investments plus commissions, the funds were diverted into the scammers' digital wallets. Seven victims from New York, Virginia, and Florida were identified, including a New York resident who lost $100,000 and a Florida woman who lost $300,000. Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the cruelty of exploiting job seekers and is working to recover the stolen funds. Collaborating with the Queens District Attorney's cryptocurrency unit, they have managed to trace and freeze the assets, aiming for restitution to the victims.
