As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to transform our lives, leaders are stepping up: Volunteers are working every day to process COVID-19 tests. Teachers are finding creative ways to help their students engage in distance learning. Nonprofits are dedicating their resources to serving the most vulnerable among us. At CZI, we’re committed to supporting these leaders and everyone who’s fighting to ensure that our local Bay Area communities and our world emerge stronger from this crisis.

A STRONGER COMMUNITY
- CZI is supporting local grant partners as they respond to COVID-19. Despite new obstacles, these partners are addressing the most urgent needs facing San Francisco Bay Area communities. For example, Daly City Partnership is assisting isolated seniors in North San Mateo County, and One Life Counseling launched a new free hotline for parents who may
need mental health support during this time.
- CZI joined other philanthropies to launch the California Immigrant Resilience Fund. The fund aims to raise $50 million to provide cash assistance to undocumented Californians and their families, who are ineligible for COVID-19 federal relief and state safety-net programs.
- CZI is proud to call Redwood City home, and committed $300,000 to assist Redwood City-based small businesses impacted by the pandemic.
A STRONGER WORLD
- Since the end of March, CZI has committed more than $8.4 million in responsive giving to support teachers and students impacted by school closures. These grants include $5 million to support educators and families, $1.3 million to provide resources for states and school districts, $1.2 million to direct supports to teachers to better lead distance learning, and $1 million to support California’s efforts to expand access to distance learning.
- Priscilla and Learning Policy Institute’s Linda Darling-Hammond had a Facebook Live discussion on how best to support students’ academic needs and well-being during this difficult time.
- CZI grantee Prison Policy Initiative is analyzing the response to COVID-19 in U.S. jails and prisons, and bringing inequities to the attention of advocates, policymakers, and the media.
CZI IN THE NEWS
- Antibody tests are important to evaluate the spread of COVID-19. Read the New York Times story about researchers at the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub who are part of a group of more than 50 experts evaluating the credibility of 14 different antibody tests.
- CZI committed $13.6 million to a nine-month collaboration between the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, Stanford University, and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to better understand the spread of COVID-19 in the Bay Area and gather data about healthcare workers’ immunity to the virus. - Bloomberg News reports on the hundreds of UCSF graduate students and staff volunteers who helped rapidly build out a new clinical lab that is now offering free COVID-19 testing to all 58 California counties’ Departments of Public Health.
- In a STAT op-ed, Priscilla urged medical professionals to stand together to support the 29,000 DACA recipients who are on the front lines of the COVID-19 response.
- In celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week, CZI partnered with DonorsChoose to connect more teachers with the tools they need to facilitate distance learning across the country. Read more in People Magazine.
