In the past 24 hours, the new administration has delivered on campaign promises to undermine our democratic institutions. Their actions threaten to:
* Deny birthright citizenship,
* Grant clemency to individuals convicted of trying to overthrow our government,
* Attack LGBTQ rights,
* Gut the civil service sector, and more.
The president has continued to spread the dangerous lie that the 2020 election was “rigged” and declared, “we’re not gonna let that happen again.” This is a direct attack on our democracy—and the groundwork is being laid for even greater erosion of our rights.
Our democracy is at a tipping point, and the best defense is a strong offense. The need for electoral reform—starting with ranked choice voting—has never been clearer or more urgent.
GOP-controlled states are already introducing more bills to ban RCV, and a national ban could be next. We cannot let this happen.
We will spend every day at FairVote Minnesota over the next four years to ensure we:
* Protect the progress we’ve made,
* Block any efforts to ban RCV, and
* Expand the use of RCV in communities ready to embrace it.
This year, we’ll also be on the ground educating voters in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, Minnetonka, and St. Louis Park, where RCV is already making elections more fair and inclusive.
