John — Yesterday, I sat in the Rotunda during Trump’s inauguration, and I have some thoughts I would like to share with you.
As a member of Congress and a defender of our democracy, I had a constitutional function as a co-equal branch of government to listen to all that Trump said yesterday.
It was difficult for me to sit there, listening to him spew lies, spread hatred, and disparage the work President Biden worked hard to accomplish over the last four years to support Americans.
Trump made many ridiculous statements — some that even left me wondering if he had declared war on Panama and the Martians. He made sure to ignite his base by continuing to preach division and lies. And later signed several outrageous, unreasonable, and harmful executive actions that would trouble our economy, our planet, and our people.
Over $1 trillion of oligarchic support stood beside Trump on the stage during the inauguration, and if that tells you anything, John, it's whose interests he is defending — and it is not those of you, your family, and the American people.
Sitting in that Rotunda was a reminder of what lies ahead in these next four years. It showed us that our democracy is at risk and our country is shifting toward oligarchy. But most of all for me, it reignited my resolve to be a leader and check on the worst impulses of Trump’s presidency.
As we begin to face the next few years head-on, I’d like to hear your thoughts on the inauguration and the President's actions yesterday.
I am ready to be a leader and hold Trump accountable. I hope that I can do it with you by my side.
Thank you,
Eugene Vindman
