Dear John,

Two years ago, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland took historic action to revoke mineral leases allowing for dangerous sulfide-ore copper mining by a Chilean company that would have irreparably polluted Minnesota’s Boundary Waters. While this was a worthy cause for celebration, I noted at the time that a future administration could reverse Secretary Haaland’s decision. Unfortunately, that time may soon arrive.

With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, his extreme Project 2025 has explicitly called for reversing the decision made by Secretary Haaland and opening the door to scientifically-unsound and toxic mining to proceed and do irreversible harm to the Boundary Waters. And if you don’t take my word for it, House Republicans already passed a bill just last year that also does so.

These actions run afoul of the established science and threaten the future viability of the Boundary Waters for all those who cherish its natural wonder. That’s why today with the start of a new Congress, I’m once again reintroducing the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act, my bill that would PERMANENTLY protect our precious Minnesota treasure from sulfide-ore copper mining, regardless of who’s president, and preserve its scenic and natural beauty for future generations to enjoy as a place to camp, canoe, hike, and fish.

I admit, given the Republican trifecta in Washington, it’s an uphill fight. But it’s one I won’t back away from.

Chip in $10, $25, $50, or whatever you can to join me in making our voices heard to Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress that the Boundary Waters is not open for business.

Sincerely,

Rep. Betty McCollum
Member of Congress
