Hi John,
15 years ago today, the Supreme Court decided money should rule our politics, not people.
Citizens United v. FEC (popularly known as "Citizens United") overturned longstanding restrictions on political fundraising and spending, granting corporations and wealthy individuals virtually unlimited political spending power.
And boy, have they used that power. In 2024 alone, independent groups like Super PACs spent $4.5 BILLION supporting candidates and causes.
Call us crazy, but we think people, not corporations, should decide elections.
The good news is, there are things you can do today to make a difference:
- Take the pledge to support campaigns fighting to overturn Citizens United. Making your voice heard will help politicians know we're not OK with the status quo.
- Help fund our movement to fix our broken political system. It might seem ironic to ask for money while talking about how to get money out of politics, but to drown out the voices of Big Money, we need to build a groundswell of financial support from everyday Americans.
Our political system is broken, and the outsized influence of big money is a big reason why. Together, let's fix it.
