SIGN NOW: We must put an end to Big Money’s grip on our democracy >>
John,
Fifteen years ago today, the Supreme Court handed down its disastrous Citizens United decision – opening the floodgates for unlimited corporate spending in elections.
The consequences have been dire: Corporations and special interests now spend billions to influence our elections and buy themselves a seat at the table, and an administration stacked with billionaire megadonors – the wealthiest in history – has just taken office. [1]
Just yesterday, President Trump gave the tech billionaires who funded his campaign front row seats to his inauguration – while the people who voted for him were figuratively and literally left out in the cold.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
The Freedom to Vote Act and the DISCLOSE Act offer real, tangible solutions to our Big Money problem. These reforms would shine a light on secret political spending, get dark money out of politics, and establish small-dollar, citizen-funded elections that give everyday Americans a stronger voice in our democracy.
We know the current administration and Congress will make this an uphill battle. But even in the face of gridlock, it’s crucial that we continue to fight and make it clear that the American people refuse to accept the status quo.
If you believe, like I do, that government should be of, by, and for the people – then please join me in rejecting the status quo and telling Congress we want to END the Citizens United era.
John, this isn’t just wishful thinking – we're already advancing crucial reforms to get Big Money out of politics in states across the country. We won reforms in Oregon and Florida last year, and this year are advocating for policies in California, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, and elsewhere.
This fight is an uphill battle, but it’s one we can’t afford to back down from. It’s about more than overturning Citizens United – it’s about creating a government that works for everyone, not just the highest bidder.
The Freedom to Vote Act would protect and expand voting rights while empowering small donors through matching fund programs for campaigns. The DISCLOSE Act would close loopholes that allow untraceable “dark money” to flood our elections, ensuring voters know who is trying to influence their voices and their votes.
We have the solutions, and by keeping up the pressure, we can make them a reality. Take action today to help end the era of Big Money in politics.
I hope you’ll join us in this fight, John.
Thanks for all you do,
