Team — Yesterday Donald Trump signed a flurry of executive orders that rolled back important progress with the stroke of his pen.
Throughout his week, I want to highlight some of these actions and break down exactly what this administration is doing to hurt vulnerable people and communities as they embrace far-right policies and fascist tendencies.
On the issue of immigration, Trump has signed executive orders that:
Illegally end the constitutional right of birthright citizenship by no longer recognizing the citizenship of children born in the US to immigrants who lack legal status.
Declare a ‘national emergency’ at the southern border that can be used to deploy the military to the border to supply troops and build mass detention camps.
Shut down the CPD One App, a crucial resource used by migrants who are seeking asylum or legal entry into the US, and cancel all existing appointments.
Institute a complete and indefinite ban on all refugees entering the US no matter the circumstance.
Curt — It can’t be said enough that this is not who we are. The Statue of Liberty at Ellis Island is inscribed with a simple message:
“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
As a refugee who sought asylum and immigrated to America, I know that these executive orders are a dangerous affront to our rights, our values, and the safety and prosperity of those seeking a better life in our nation.
I’m working on legislation right now that would protect the rights of those who come to this country, but the truth is the best solution to this crisis and the dangerous policies of Donald Trump is to rebuild a grassroots movement of progressive opposition.
Throughout our history, under presidents of both parties, grassroots movements have helped build popular support for the civil rights of Americans of all kinds and set the agenda in Washington. We saw it under Trump’s first term, and we need to bring that energy back once again.
So, in the wake of these new executive orders, will you pitch in $3 or whatever you can afford to help us build the movement to oppose Trump wherever we can? We can’t sit back and let our country slide into fascism. It’s time to start standing up for our immigrant friends and neighbors.
