All the news and updates you don't want to miss. Thanks for speaking out August 16, 2019 Visit Me! I hope you got out and enjoyed the sunny weather this week—and maybe got on the ferries too. On the bridge of the M/V Leconte with Rep. Hannan and Capt. Golczynski Walking Back the Vetoes The governor announced he'll make final decisions on the supplemental operating budget Monday. Over the past week, the governor changed directions and decided he won't re-veto some of the funding the legislature restored. That includes a significant portion of the funding for the University, early childhood education, libraries, legal services for poor Alaskans, and senior benefits. None of this would be possible without the thousands of Alaskans who spoke out. Your outreach—to legislators, the governor, and your friends & neighbors—changed the direction of our state. The governor went from proposing cuts and vetoing funding, to declaring he'll sign the appropriation for these vital services. There are still essential programs in limbo: public broadcasting, fisheries management, mental health treatment, addiction, Medicaid, prosecutors, agricultural inspections, VPSOs, the Arts Council, and more. HB 2001 also has a $1,600 PFD and protects our financial future by moving money to the principal of the Permanent Fund. I don't know whether the governor will sign these sections either. Please keep reaching out to him in these final days before he acts on the bill. At the Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center with Jack Strong and Rep. Hannan Hearing from You I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone who came to the town halls and office hours in Juneau, Haines, Klukwan, Skagway, and Gustavus. Even when the sun was shining, the fish were running, and the berries were ripe, folks turned out in great numbers. Thank you also to everyone from the governments, non-profits, and other local organizations who met with Rep. Hannan and me about how the state can help (or get out of the way) on issues that matter. If I missed you during these meetings, you can always reach out to me or my staff any time. You scrolled past the phone numbers and e-mail links on your way to reading this.
