Workers' Rights in the Palm Oil Sector of Honduras

Honduras has been a key producer of palm oil since the 1970s. The palm oil sector is dominated by two major companies that source from smaller companies, cooperatives, and farms. Research from the Pennsylvania State University and the Solidarity Center in 2024 involving surveys with 407 workers and key informants reveals that workers labor in life-threatening conditions.
This study portrays the stark reality that workers face, ranging from workplace violence and harassment to infringements on freedom of association and collective bargaining. Through union organizing, workers are fighting to change conditions in the sector by increasing their wages, reducing the number of working hours, and addressing health and safety risks as well as violence at work. Due to the high level of anti-union violence in the country, it is pivotal for employers and the government to enforce labor rights and standards in the sector.

Honduras ha sido un productor clave de aceite de palma desde los 1970s. El sector del aceite de palma está dominado por dos empresas importantes que se abastecen de empresas, cooperativas y granjas pequeñas. Una investigación realizada por la Pennsylvania State University y el Centro de Solidaridad en 2024 que incluyó encuestas con 407 trabajadores e informantes claves revela que los trabajadores trabajan en condiciones que ponen en peligro sus vidas.
Este estudio retrata la cruda realidad que enfrentan los trabajadores, que va desde la violencia y el acoso en el lugar de trabajo hasta las violaciones de la libertad de asociación y la negociación colectiva. A través de la organización sindical, los trabajadores están luchando para cambiar las condiciones en el sector –aumentando sus salarios, reduciendo el número de horas de trabajo y abordando los riesgos de salud y seguridad, así como la violencia en el trabajo. Debido al alto nivel de violencia antisindical en el país, es fundamental que los empleadores y el gobierno cumplan con los derechos y normas laborales en el sector.
