VIDEO OF THE DAY: Republican leader accidentally exposes his own party on live TV
GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson was asked point-blank on NBC's Meet the Press if Republicans could point to any single piece of legislation they are working on that would bring down the price of groceries, and the answer, you will not be surprised to learn, was a very, very, very convoluted "no." Spoiler alert: it was never about grocery prices, folks.

Trump pardons nearly 1,500 Jan. 6 rioters and violent insurrectionists
Donald did not wait long to make a horrible splash in the Trump #2.0 era, pardoning nearly 1,500 rioters and VIOLENT INSURRECTIONISTS who, we must remind you, stormed the US Capitol, physically attacked and injured hundreds of police officers, destroyed millions of dollars worth of federal property, and — in one very specific instance — even smeared human feces on the walls of Congress four short years ago to stop certification of Joe Biden's 2020 victory and overthrow American democracy. Oh, he also granted clemency to none other that neo-fascist Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who had been convicted and sentenced to 22 years in prison for committing seditious conspiracy and other federal felonies. Good stuff! It is SO nice to be great again!

Idaho GOP launches shocking attack on marriage equality
Human Rights Campaign: Republicans in the Idaho legislature have filed a new resolution calling on the Supreme Court to repeal the right to same-sex marriage across the country. Though largely symbolic, this brazen attack is just the latest threat to LGBTQ+ rights, and demonstrates the persistent danger our community faces. That’s why the Human Rights Campaign is gearing up to fight for equality at the federal level, in state legislatures and in courts across the nation — because we need to stay vigilant and we need ordinary people to stand up and take action. Migrants stranded when thousands of appointments to enter the US are canceled as Trump takes office
Outside a series of north Mexico border crossings where mazes of concrete barriers and thick fencing eventually spill into the United States, hope and excitement evaporated into despair and disbelief moments after Donald Trump took office. US Customs and Border Protection announced Monday that the CBP One app that worked as recently as yesterday morning would no longer be used to admit migrants after facilitating LEGAL entry for nearly 1 million people since January 2023. Tens of thousands of appointments that were scheduled into February were canceled, applicants — some who'd been waiting in line for months — were told.

Nope, nothing darkly weird or deeply disturbing about that incredibly specific gesture, Elon.
Trump orders US exit from Paris climate agreement AND World Health Organization
In an unsurprising and terribly consequential move, the MAGA cult leader very publicly ordered the United States to exit the historic Paris climate accord AND withdrew from the World Health Organization, precisely at a time when climate change-fueled natural disasters, drug-resistant diseases, and the threat of new pandemics are markedly increasing. The United States is far and away the single largest contributor to the WHO, responsible for roughly 18% of the global health organization's total budget. Needless to say, that hole will be very hard to fill.

Trump's inauguration pastor immediately launches crypto token
Just hours after he delivered a bombastic benediction at Trump’s inauguration, Reverend Lorenzo Sewell followed Donald and Melania's lead and announced the launch of his own crypto token dubbed, why not, $Lorenzo. "I need you to do me a favor right now," he said in a video on X. "I want you to be able to see politics become manifest, not just in the way where we're praying over political gatherings, but we're seeing us become the hands and the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ." It's admittedly been a minute since we cracked open the Bible here at Daily Dose of Democracy, but we seem to recall Jesus cautioning that camels have an easier time passing through needles than rich men do entering the gates of Heaven. Dunno if that extends to Donnie and his many crypto bros but we have our suspicions...
Trump orders federal workers back to the office, freezes federal hiring, halts new regulations
President Trump signed an executive order Monday requiring employees of the federal government to return to in-person, full-time work. The White House readout of the order states, "Heads of all departments and agencies in the executive branch of Government shall, as soon as practicable, take all necessary steps to terminate remote work arrangements and require employees to return to work in-person at their respective duty stations on a full-time basis, provided that the department and agency heads shall make exemptions they deem necessary." Trump signed the order — one of several — onstage at Washington, DC‘s Capital One Arena. He also froze federal hiring and prevented federal officials from making new regulations. Work-from-home policies, which drastically accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic, have lingered, even as the Biden administration attempted to dial them back.
Marco Rubio confirmed by Senate as Trump’s secretary of state
The man Trump once mercilessly mocked as "Little Marco" is now the first of the convicted felon's high-level Cabinet picks to be confirmed by Congress. Just hours after Trump was sworn in as president, senators voted 99 to 0 to confirm their longtime colleague from Florida.
