Dear FAMMily,
Since I last wrote to you, President Biden granted additional clemencies in his final hours in office. In all, he commuted 4,168 prison sentences – the largest number of commutations by any president in American history.
We here at FAMM are overjoyed with what that number means: new beginnings, stronger families, safer communities. Parents will once again be able to read bedtime stories to their kids and attend Back-to-School Nights. Returning citizens will bring important perspective and wisdom to the communities that most need it. Relationships can mend and grow. Healing can happen.
The fact that 4,168 prison sentences were commuted also shows the extent to which reform was needed. President Biden’s decision to act with mercy and justice as he was leaving office gives all of us at FAMM a boost of energy and affirmation of our work.
But many more people for whom a second chance is sorely justified are still behind bars. We must continue this momentum and keep fighting for real, lasting reform. There are still too many people in prison.
Today we celebrate – but we never stop working. And that work could not happen without you.
