Welcome to our first email of our 100 Days of Action series where we will share updates and actions you can take around the first 100 days of the new administration. We are also sharing what's happening in Tallahassee as committee weeks have already begun for the 2025 legislative session and now a special session has also been announced. Our goal is to keep you informed and empowered with the tools you need to make your voice heard as you participate in the Democratic process. Our elected leaders need to hear from us! We'll help you get loud.
Please share your feedback with us and flag anything you would like us to consider for distribution. Also, make sure you are following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We get loud on social media too!
Trump's choice of Fox News host Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense is a disaster. Pete Hegseth’s confirmation as Secretary of Defense would pose a grave threat to our freedoms and our national security. As constituents, our voices matter! Tell our senators to vote NO.
Earlier this month, House Republicans introduced a bill to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. This Act saves older Americans billions in health care costs. As of now, our House Representative Mike Haridopolos has not yet cosponsored this bill. He needs to hear from us!
TAKE ACTION: Call Rep. Haridopolos' DC office at (202) 225-3671 and read the following script:
My name is ______. I live in zip code ________ and I urge my Representative to withhold support for HR191. This bill would significantly increase costs for millions of Americans. HR191 would overturn the cap on insulin costs and the $2,000 cap on out-of-pocket precrription drug copayments for millions of older Americans. Floridians simply cannot afford for this bil to pass or for our Congressman to support this bill. Can I count on the Congressman to vote NO on HR191?
Republicans, led by Mike Johnson, are trying to condition aid to CA during their moment of need.
TAKE ACTION: Call our Republican House member, Mike Haridopolos and Speaker Johnson and tell them to stop threatening to withhold aid to CA!
.
Mike Johnson’s office is (202) 225-4000.
Rep. Haridopolos office is (202) 225-3671
Say:
Hi, I’m a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is _______. I’m deeply concerned and angered by Republican threats to hold aid for California hostage to a debt ceiling increase. It is immoral and repugnant. California is literally subsidizing the rest of the United States, red states in particular, through the federal budget. How dare anyone withhold funds from them in their moment of need, or tie that aid to anything? Give California what they need, no strings attached. Thank you.
House Speaker, Mike Johnson has removed House Intelligence Committee Chair, Rep. Mike Turner, in response to pressure coming out of Mar-a-Lago. Turner told CBS News’ Margaret Brennan that Johnson had cited “concerns from Mar-a-Lago” as the reason for the decision. The Republican Chairman has been an outspoken advocate for Ukraine funding. Turner also pushed back on Trump’s false claims that Haitian migrants in his Ohio district were eating pets.
Governor DeSantis has called a Special Legislative Session to double down on President-Elect Trump’s anti-immigrant agenda on January 27. He urged lawmakers to "act quickly" with a long list of extreme policy proposals that further target immigrants. Including DACA students. He wants to grab national headlines and double down on divisive, partisan, anti-immigrant rhetoric.
A new proposal would ban petition collection—forcing every voter to mail in petitions individually. This would make future ballot initiatives nearly impossible, silencing Floridians on issues like clean water, housing, and reproductive freedom.
House Speaker Perez (R) & Senate President Albritton (R) sent a joint letter dismissing the notion a special session as "premature" and calling the Governor's decision "completely irresponsible." But then, President Trump endorsed the idea of a special session.
This move could impact Florida’s immigrant communities and our state’s future. We'll keep you updated!
Trump’s executive actions are deeply concerning as they threaten to unravel crucial social, environmental, and legal protections. The rollback of transgender rights and the elimination of DEI programs could marginalize vulnerable communities, while aggressive immigration policies, including sending troops to the border and resuming the policy of making asylum seekers wait in Mexico, risk exacerbating humanitarian crises. The prioritization of deregulation in the oil and gas industries could lead to environmental harm, and redefining gender in narrow, biological terms ignores the lived realities of many people. Additionally, promising pardons for those involved in the January 6th Capitol attack sends a dangerous message about accountability. Taken together, these actions signal a shift toward divisive and exclusionary policies that could destabilize progress in equality, human dignity, and environmental responsibility.
Gov. DeSantis has appointed Ashley Moody to fill Rubio’s Senate seat. As Florida’s Attorney General, Moody was a staunch supporter of DeSantis’ extreme policies, failing to act as the independent "people’s lawyer" Floridians need. She neglected to hold insurers and corporations accountable, protect workers, or oppose government overreach, leaving working families and seniors without a true advocate.
Moody will be replaced by DeSantis' chief of staff, James Uthmeier. Uthmeier became chief of staff after being the governor's top official attorney, and has been one of the most influential people in state government and DeSantis' key advisor – after his wife Casey. He has been active in The Federalist Society, an operation described by Senator Whitehouse as "funded by dark money and designed to remake our judiciary on behalf of a distinct group of very wealthy anonymous funders."
And we leave you with this encouragement of HOPE in Spite of Trump.
If you’re feeling despair today, I completely understand. But Trump’s second term will expose a reality that has been hidden from many Americans: the raw, stinking power of the American oligarchy. I’m hopeful that America will see this reality for what it is and respond to it.
